Efficacy Household Hygiene

Our start-up, a joint venture between Prof. Dr. Dirk Bockmühl (Professor at Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences) and the Dr. Brill Group, is dedicated to applied hygiene. With our specialized know-how, we combine scientific expertise and practice-oriented research to develop innovative solutions for hygienic challenges in the domestic environment.

Our institute carries out comprehensive hygienic-microbiological tests for manufacturers of washing machines and dishwashers for non-commercial use. We also test the hygienic-microbiological effectiveness of detergents, cleaners, disinfectants, sanitizers and related products.

We work in accordance with recognized standards, such as DIN EN 17658 for chemical textile disinfection in the domestic sector, IEC 63331 for the microbiological performance of household dishwashers or ASTM E2406 for the effectiveness of laundry hygiene products.

We are available for commissions, collaborations and research projects in this area and work closely with Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, other research institutes and manufacturers. Our aim is to shape a clean and hygienic future for households together with our partners.

BB SimReal© method – simulated reality in the laboratory

The BB SimReal method uses various standard methods (EN, ISO, DIN, ASTM), but adapts them to the actual conditions in practical application, for example by selecting more relevant test germs, using temperatures or exposure times that are closer to reality, the (additional) application of mechanics or the investigation of possible long-term effects.

In this way, realistic conditions are simulated in the laboratory and thus show the effect of the product under application conditions without losing the informative value of a standard method.

Of course, we also test classically according to standard methods, for example to detect antimicrobial effects during washing and cleaning:

New method to test domestic laundry detergents against viruses
With the paper Konkol et al. we aimed to develop a method to assess the virucidal performance of domestic laundry in a lab-scale washing machine (Rotawash) based on EN 17658 in Cooperation with Henkel. The method developed was led by our joint PhD student Justyna Konkol in cooperation with the Henkel team led by Dr. Mirco Weide in Düsseldorf, our Dr. Brill Virus experts in Bremen Dr. Britta Becker and Dr. Dajana Paulmann as well as from our cooperation partner Professor Dr. Eike Steinmann from Ruhr-University Bochum, Professor Dr. Andreas Dotzauer from University Bremen as well as our Dr. Brill + Prof. Bockmühl lab director Dr. Britta Brands from Kleve.   With this great team approach we are now prepared to test domestic laundry detergents against e. g. Testing according to DIN EN 17658
We are pleased to add testing according to DIN EN 17658 to our portfolio of services from November.  The standard "Chemical textile disinfection for domestic use - Test methods and requirements (phase 2, stage 2)" is a standard that tests textile disinfection for products used in the domestic sector (or in the food, industrial and public sectors) at low temperatures (≤ 40 °C). Products for the main wash cycle as well as for the rinse cycle can be tested. In addition to laundry disinfection, the standard also specifies separate criteria if the product is intended for aesthetic and malodour treatment. On 8.2.2022 the new Institute for Applied Hygiene is founded and is from now on a new member of the Dr. Brill Institutes Group
The foundation is based in particular on the successful work of the working group of Professor Dr. Dirk Bockmühl at the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences on topics of applied hygiene in the household sector. Here, for example, the influence of modified washing and dishwashing processes at lower temperatures for energy-saving reasons on hygiene is a central topic. Furthermore, more and more laundry is being washed that cannot withstand higher washing temperatures due to the low quality of the fabrics. For especially manufacturers in the field of washing and dishwashing in the household sector, services are offered to check the efficiency of cleaning and disinfection processes. Here, individual tests that reflect practice as closely as possible are of great interest.
